In 2017, Jo Ann Heppermann, a parishioner of Saint Bernadette, went to Fonfrede, Haiti to help end cervical cancer, the leading cause of death of women in Haiti. She, along with 4 fellow Rotarians from her Prospect/Goshen Rotary Club, went to implement the See & Treat Method of detecting cervical cancer. By using ordinary vinegar, it is possible to detect precancerous cervical lesions, freeze the lesions if found and remove them if necessary, all BEFORE the lesions became cancerous, thereby saving lives. With that phase of the project now well underway, Jo Ann and her Club are now working on phase 2—vaccinating girls and boys in the same area between the ages of 9 and 13 against the HPV virus that causes cervical cancer. Come listen to Jo Ann talk about this amazing project, the highs and lows of her trip to Haiti and how her club plans to implement phase 2. You’ll laugh, you might cry and you just may be inspired!
